JOHANNESBURG – 1 April 2019: Geko Publishing is proud to announce a call for submissions for the Geko Mofolo Prize for Outstanding Fiction in Sesotho.
The inaugural Prize officially opens for manuscripts written in any version or orthography of Sesotho on April 1, 2019. Writers, authors and all Basotho from every corner of the world, are encouraged to send their manuscripts, of no less than 25 000 (twenty-five-thousand) words for consideration. The winner of the Prize will get published by Geko Publishing SA (Pty) Ltd and be given an opportunity to enroll at the Creative Writing Summer School at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley, South Africa. The winner will also get a voucher to purchase books online or in-store. They will also receive a book hamper.

The inaugural Prize will be judged by five patrons – with varying expertise and experience in Sesotho, law, ICT and heritage. The inaugural Chair of the Prize is Phehello J Mofokeng, who is a seasoned publisher, author and speaker at many literature festivals.
The patrons are: Mr Makashane Ntlhabo, Ms Mathe Ntšekhe, Mr Tebogo Mofokeng, Mr Otsile Matlou. The patrons bring a wide variety of expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm to the Prize. Mr Ntlhabo is a Basotho heritage expert and professional. Mr Otsile Matlou is a legal professional and a chief executive of one of the biggest law firms in the continent. Ms Mathe Ntšekhe is an MSc graduate and ICT specialist. Mr Tebogo Mofokeng is a special advisor to one of the royal houses of Basotho kingdom.
About Geko Mofolo Prize
Geko Prize for Fiction in Sesotho is an annual prize for publishing of outstanding fiction manuscript written in Sesotho. The award pays homage to the significance of the pioneer of Sesotho literature, Thomas Mokopu Mofolo. It is named in his honour. The Geko Mofolo Prize for Outstanding Fiction in Sesotho is intended to ignite interest and efforts in the writing of new, imaginative and original fiction writing in Sesotho in the new and modern age. The Prize also aims to encourage the high writing and fiction standards of Thomas Mofolo.
The prize is administered and awarded in South Africa.
The prize submissions are open to all Basotho in the continent and in the diaspora.
The award opens at in April and closes in at the end July of every year. The winner is announced on the anniversary of Thomas Mofolo’s passing; on 8 September every year. Thomas Mofolo went to eternal sleep on September 8, 1948. He was born on 22 December 1876, in Khojane, Leribe, Lesotho.
The winning manuscript is published the following year in March, when the award for the current year is opened.
