Imaginative scholar

Very imaginative, explorative, political and highly entertaining in parts, some of the stories are futuristic and fantastic. In story after story of the collection Walking the Road of Death by anti-apartheid poet and author Peter Horn, the reader will find a chameleon-like first person narrator, who moves through apocalyptic and surreal atmospheres.

Post-apartheid stories

Horn’s colloquial tone establishes an intimate alliance with the reader, renewed at the beginning of each new story. Written and set during the 90s in South Africa, the stories underwent a long journey before they appeared in print, having been turned down by several publishers before twenty years later, in 2015, it got published.

Spiritual centre

“Horn often manages to unite inner and outer South African landscapes to capture the spiritual centre of the forms suffering can take in this country.” Peter Horn was Honorary Professor and Research Associate in German Studies, Professor emeritus and Honorary Lifetime Fellow at UCT. He passed away in July 2019, in his home in Joburg.
